FEBRUARY – Cultural Wealth

In celebration of Black History Month DLA presents

Sharing our Cultural Wealth

presented by Dr. Jeff McGee

“Wealth is the ability to fully experience life.” -HD Thoreau

Wealth is a mindset; and cultural wealth is defined as a collection of knowledge, skills, abilities and connections – present or not, available or not – to communities in order to survive and thrive.

Cultural wealth often deals with economics however, this workshop will focus on the cultural ties and community cultural capital that strengthen and sustain our individual and collective wealth, value, and beliefs.

While our stories, networks, and neighborhoods reflect the values of belonging, worth, and significance, we are still challenged by systemic racism. Dr. Jeff McGee, our expert facilitator, will lead us through this highly interactive workshop, challenging assumptions and inequities, and helping us explore, promote, and empower a culture of assets versus deficits.

  • We will create a community culture map and “balance sheet” to illustrate and empower us to think creatively and critically.
  • We will build our own equity checklists that we can use in our organizations.
  • We will also articulate and share our values, knowledge, and stories.

Join us in honoring each other and Black Americans of yesterday and today. See you then!

Objectives

Through the Community Cultural Wealth activity, participants will conduct mini-presentations based on an assigned “wealth” topics. This highly, interactive and engaging activity helps participants think creatively and critically to understand equity and systemic racism.
